10 Must-Note Tips Before Attending An Interview

Updated: Jan 14, 2021

So, you've been called for an interview!

For the clients that I work with this is amazing, particularly as some of them have been unemployed for over 7 months. Once your résumé has been crafted, there is actually a significant amount of detail that goes into securing the next job. Research shows that most hiring decisions by employers are made at the first interview. It's worth preparing properly as you may only get one shot at showcasing your talents and suitability for the post in question.

Let's Work This Out

From the employer's point of view, an interview is a place to get to know you as a professional. The interviewer will be keen to match the contents of your résumé with you, face to face.

It's also an opportunity for you as a jobseeker to decide whether the job meets your career requirements and interests and whether you can see yourself working within the organisation. Is there a good fit on both sides?

Preparation is key to any level of success and it's important to do your homework before showing up (early!) for the interview. Tardiness is inexcusable.

10 Handy Guidelines For Job Seekers

  1. Preparation involves paperwork. Print off a copy of your résumé, just in case the interviewer needs to refer to it and it's not available.

  2. If you have a digital portfolio, make sure that the link has been sent to the employer, prior to the interview so that there's been time for him/her to have a read through.

  3. You may choose to prepare a smart and professional folder for your CV, relevant records (copies of degrees, certificates etc), technical drawings, sample lesson plans, artwork etc. Whatever is relevant to your area of work and provides a sample. To be extra careful, either save everything to your chosen online portal (Google Drive), or copy it on to a USB stick (that's somewhat dated, but is better than nothing).

  4. Find out everything you can about your prospective employer.

  5. Have a close look at the job description for the position and match your job skills, experience and education to it.

  6. Ask yourself a few questions and answer them in writing. For example - 'Why do I want this job?'; ''Why do I want to work with this particular employer?"; 'Why am I the best candidate for this job?'

  7. Dress appropriately for the position. Dress smartly.

  8. Remember to arrive early (mentioned above already) and alone.

  9. Be ready for the inevitable question - 'Tell me about yourself". Write down an answer beforehand.

  10. After the interview, send a thank you note via email.

I trust this has been helpful. The tips can be adapted for interviews that are held online.

Wishing you all the best as you create viable options for the next steps in your career.

Email me with any questions or suggestions. I'm still writing résumés that get noticed.

Best!
